Best and Worst: Trader Joe's Edition

Trader Joe’s is known for their frozen meals and inexpensive wine, but what else do they have to offer? Turns out, they have a LOT. We’ve scoured the TJ aisles and tested products from cereal to toothpaste, wine to makeup wipes, and we’ve found some winners….and some losers. Here’s a little peak into the best and worst of Trader Joe’s shelves.

Best of Trader Joe’s:

  1. Trader Joe’s Frosted Flakes Cereal

Turns out the Kelloggs cereal isn’t the only thing that is grrrrrrrrreat! In a blind taste test, reviewers could not tell the difference between Trader Joe’s and Kelloggs. Even better, with the Trader Joe’s version you save $1.50.

  2. World’s Puffiest White Cheddar Corn Puffs

Pirate’s booty are a beloved snack. Some Pirate’s Booty connoisseurs refused to acknowledge the insane similarities, but us mere mortals couldn’t tell the difference between the two.

  3. Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Brownie Mix

Run, don’t walk, to Trader Joe’s to pick up this gluten free brownie mix. We compared it to a Simple Mills Gluten Free mix, and the Trader Joe’s brownies turned out much fudgier and more chocolate-y. While the two were not similar at all, all reviewers preferred the taste and texture of TJ.

  4. Ode to the Classic Potato Chip

Lays, you’ve been replaced. The Trader Joe’s potato chips were definitely a fan favorite. They are thicker than Lays, and slightly less salty. But, overall testers preferred the crunchiness of the generic chips.

  5. Face & Body Sunscreen Lotion

This Trader Joe’s sunscreen is over $3 cheaper than the Neutrogena version, and reviewers actually preferred it to the name brand. The Trader Joe’s lotion has less of a smell than Neutrogena and rubs in quickly with no leftover residue.

Worst of Trader Joe’s:

  1. Crunchy Cinnamon Squares Cereal

Okay, Kelloggs seriously won out on this one. The TJ version is significantly less cinnamon-y and sugary. This dupe is nowhere near as good as its name brand counterpart.

  2. Raisin Bran Cereal

Where did the sugar on the raisins go, Trader Joe’s! The OG Kelloggs Raisin Bran cereal was much lighter and more flavorful than the Trader Joe’s version.

  3. Raises the Bar Chewy Granola Bar

Again, a noble effort by Trader Joe’s, but they couldn’t quite get the texture right on these granola bars. The TJ bars are much chewier than the KIND bars, so we recommend sticking with what you know on these ones.

  4. These Peanuts Go On A Date Bar

When compared to Peanut Butter Cookie Larabars, these guys didn’t stand a chance. It takes fine skill to create a tasty treat out of minimal ingredients, and this product isn’t quite there yet.

  5. All Natural Anti-plaque Toothpaste

The Trader Joe’s toothpaste tasted like licorice. Enough said.

We’re adding more and more Trader Joe’s products into the app each week! Any specific requests? Hit us up! We want to review the products you want to see. Overall, Trader Joe’s rocks, but as always, its important to know what to look for. Make sure to consult Brandefy App on your next trip to Trader Joe’s to help you navigate the maze of aisles.
